Fishing Portugal
Elvas, Portugal, very near the Spanish border -
the area holds lots of ancient Roman Aqueducts !
We were invited to fish at Lago da Alfarofia, the
first and only commercial carp fishery in Portugal.
Invitation by the owner, Joāo Carlos, on the far right.
From the left: Peter Staggs, Stephen Buss,
Graham Noon & my-bald-self.
Joćo Carlos is a rice farmer, and Alfarofia lake
is a part of the rice field's watering system.
Many hectares of rice fields. Some of these may well
be turned into carp lakes in the future.
We set up at the lake for the carp.
In daytime we explored the famous Guadiana River. There were fish everywhere - here common carp. Smallhead Barbel feeding.
But unluckily for us, the Comizo Barbel were spawning. Back at the lake.
To try and eliminate too much damage to our baits
by the crayfish, we used tigernuts & plastic boilies.
We also boiled a lot of hemp, to give a good smell
around the baits, and keep the crayfish occupied.
Groundbaiting with hemp & boilies.
Most carp came at night,
however we did catch in the daytime too.
Daytime Common Carp comes to the net. Biggest fish of the trip, Peter with 20 kg+ Common.
The lake has an abundance of fishes,
including big Eel (over 3 kg),
Sunperch, and Largemouth/Black Bass to well over 2 kg. Joćo Carlos with a Craypot.
Joćo Carlos invited us to a veritable Crayfeast. So the Crays really have a good use :-) Wonderful lake, Lovely food, Great times -
Thanks guys !!!
Also, the story of GIANT CARP &  carp waters from
the area, which easily have the potential to break
the world record. Here a common of 33½ kg !
Peter Staggs with a 28 kg mirror, and other phenomenal catches, which will be
revealed in the coming articles to be published
in Fisk & Fri and other European magazines.
