Fishing Amazonas
Air Taxi from Manaus to Nova Olinda do Norte. Flooded Amazonian village. Lovely sunset over the Amazon.
Tackle being readied, and Rubinho tying one of many jigs. Again, wonderful food,
and the Brazilian national drink: Caipirinha ! Benjamin liked it as much as me :-)
Departure from the Hotel Boat, up the Sucundurí River, to our basecamp, far from civilization.
Benjamin & Thomas preparing. Big smile, and off we go. Of all the fishes in the river, the Piranha
must be defined as a pest, but to us Danes, it's an adventure, and we filmed and photographed like mad.
Lunch camp was always an exotic location. With waterfalls, and Sashimi from Tucunaré (Peacock Bass)
Tucunaré was ever present, like the Piranha, but somewhat more interesting to fight. We caught them on jigs,
wobler (Savage Gear) and on fish.
Marcel with a 5kg caught on a piece of fish. Tucunaré head used for bait, but see what
the Piranhas do in a matter of minutes !
Well, the Piranhas had one great use:
Evening time = food time - Donna Maria stirring the pot - with Piranha soup - yummie !
Rubinho treated us to a very species kind of fishing. Deep into the flooded forest, where the vegetation is thick,
and access is "very interesting", we could actually walk in between the trees, and fish for some pretty aggressive fish species:
Primarily, Tiger Characin, and apt name, and "Monoculus" Peacock Bass.
The "Monoculus" made good food, along with the Brazilian prime beef: Hallelulja !!!
Afternoons were often dedicated to catfishing. Particularly the Pirarára (Redtail Catfish). Johnny with 25 kg Pirarára.
Benjamin with 10 kg Pirarára. Love, I think. And Rubinho with a 45 kg specimen,
caught on light tackle.
One night we stayed in a sub-camp, where accommodation is a little more "wild". The "wild" being all the creep we found,
and photographed.
Exotic looking spiders, beautiful butterflies, work-a-holic ants, and much much more...
Besides the creepy-crawlers, we also "caught" fishing vultures, fierce jagouarundi,
"redeyed" black caiman, cute river dolphins,
colourful macaws,. and lots of different parrots.
We fished all sizes and all sorts of fish. Thomas hunting them with a stick - here a Leporinus.
Marcel with a 3 kg Bicuda. Rubinho with a 2˝ kg Aowana. Rubinho with a 2 kg Apapá, a kind of tarpon.

The guide, Antonio, even had to dive in to get my shovelnose catfish free. One week in the jungle, and we returned to the big boat.
From the Sucundurí we set sail for: Macambira, where we were met by a very friendly
teenage tapir, named Filo.
At Macambira we started out by catching Tambaqui / Blackfin pacu, which were excellent food.

But, the main purpose of fishing at Macambira was the Pirarucú / Arapaima.
Here Benjamin with a 12 kg fish.
Thomas with a 13 kg fish.
All good things come to an end, and after joining up with the "usual suspects"
on the small taxi plane,
we enjoyed Manaus for 36 hours of good company,
good food and some shopping !!!
